SEARCHLIGHT WEBSITE Print E-mail

Searchlight opposes racism and fascism in Britain and abroad.

It was founded in 1962 as an occasional publication and press agency specialising in gathering and analysing intelligence on the far right.
Searchlight magazine has appeared monthly since 1975 and is the first port of call for activists, journalists, politicians and academics seeking information or organised racism in Britain.
It exposes the fascists and racists' illegal activities and alerts the anti-fascist community to our opponents' intentions, plans and trends.
Searchlight has been at the forefront of campaigning against the BNP in recent years. We believe that our locally customised newspapers, ward-specific leaflets, telephone canvassing and direct mail operation have made a real difference in defeating the BNP across the country.
Working with dozens of local anti-BNP groups, Searchlight has mobilised thousands of people and is developing new coalitions that can defeat the British National Party and English Defence League and rebuild local communities.

RACISM REARS ITS UGLY HEAD IN CORNWALL (AGAIN!) Print E-mail

Some shocking news that doesn't seem to have reached the majority of the Cornish population.

A community project building called the 'Hope Project' in St. Agnes has been subject to yet another arson attack in the last 18 months. Unity Cornwall believe this is a racially motivated attack. Eventually, the Fire Service confirmed it was arson and the police has now classified the incident as a race hate crime.

The 'Western Morning News' and 'West Briton' publised the rasist incident on the 12th January 2012.

Sam Farmer, the director of the Hope Project said: "Racist have tried to run me over and they have chased me down the lane and spat on me. Police have repeatedly refused to take my statement. They say I have no evidence." Mr Farmer also said: "we're scared that if we build this back up it'll be burned down again. We know it will be."

Unity Cornwall have been supporting Mr Farmer and his family for the last couple of years and have taken statements of all Mr Farmer's racist assaults, but we have never received any request to produce these statement by the police. However, they still have the option, which should help them conduct a thorough investigation with regard to all Mr Farmer's horrid racist experience living in Cornwall for the last 12 years.

Unity Cornwall has noticed jump in the reporting of racist incidents in Cornwall. However, none of these cases are as serious as Mr Farmer's experience. The fact remains that Mr Farmer could have easily been sleeping in the premises at the time of the arson.

Unity sees many racist victims, but these incidents usually take the form of verbal abuse and/or physical attack. Also, some cases of race discrimination and/or institutional racism in the workplace.  In June 2008, the local newspapers and the Independent national newspaper covered the story of the first Asian community centre near Truro, Cornwall where a disused chapel was being developed into an Asian community centre. The Centre had three seperate attacks on it before it was completed. Obscene graffiti defaming Islam and espousing the cause of Cornish nationalism was splattered across the wall of the chapel. In earlier incidents a pig's head was nailed to the door and KKK and BNP was painted on the outside walls. After that an arsonist attack attempting to destroy the whole building with a petrol bomb occured.  At that time in 2008, the police had classified the racist incident as 'critical' even though the building actually wasn't burnt down and eventually they caught the perpetrator, but the CPS - Court Prosecution Service accepted a guilty plea of 'arson' and therefore the perpetrator only got several months of community service. Mr Farmer and Unity Cornwall hope that the police are also going to categorise this case as critical and be able to apprehend the criminal, arrest and charge he or she. Maybe the CPS will take the racist element a more seriously this time!

Unity will continue to support Mr Farmer and his family and hope that all decent people out there will also show their support. Unity's resources are very limited and funding organisations like us to do this type of work has never been taken seriously locally or nationally.

The Gershie Project Print E-mail

The Gershie project is a new voluntary agency which provides support for young people and adults from the black, Asian and ethnic minority communities: which include Gypsy, Travellers, Romany and Migrant workers.

The Gershie project is at present looking for suitable premises to start a drop-in centre, which will allow individuals access for free support and advice with trained staff and meet other visitors to the centre. The centre will have some sporting indoor facilities.

The Gershie project will encourage interaction between the Ethnic minorities that it represents and the local residents.

The Gershie project will provide support to address the problems that many of our Travellers and Ethnic minorities have to tackle in their day-to-day lives.

The Gershie project will encourage and invite meetings with the Police, Social and Welfare workers and any other agencies for which ethnic minorities are part of their work remit.

So watch this space for the latest update on progress.

Unity Cornwall is to launch the Women 4 Change Engagement Project Print E-mail

Unity Cornwall will be engaging women predominately from a Black, Minority and Ethnic (BME) background, including Mothers with Mixed-Heritage children - we hope to start with three separate groups initially. These groups will decide from themselves the type of services they would prefer to actively participate in. Activities will be supported by Unity and all its working partnerships. Individual plans will be work on and realistic targets set for each group in order from them to become an independent constituted community group - again, this can be achieved through partnership with Unity and other public and voluntary agencies.

Unity Cornwall recognises that any diversity issues that disadvantage individuals, further alienates individuals who are already isolated rurally and compounds experiences of racism and increase their own and their families' isolatoin from the mainstream society. We hope to tackle aspects of confidence and self-esteem and to help develop individual skills to be able to have an active role in the local community and with the ability to meet their own health, educational and social needs for themselves and their families. The Groups will be working on a model that will cascade the skills within the group into the community facilitating events to help raise cultural awareness and promote community cohesion.

If you would like more information about these developing groups, please contact us by telephone or email.

Unity Cornwall believes in equal opportunities for all people in our community.
