DO YOU THINK YOU CAN BECOME A MENTOR FOR YOUR COMMUNITY? Aims of the project Mentoring in the Black and Minority Ethnic communities. Adult will be recruited from the BME community to become mentors for young people. The mentoring programme is aimed help and encourage young people create their own person plan focussing on aspects relating to their future (education, training and personal development and employment). However, other social aspects will include healthy living, sexual health, recreational and creative arts activities, mental health and wellbeing, physical fitness and the criminal justice system. Unity Cornwall will also invite a variety of other agencies to deliver and share information to help enhance the programme and partnership will be formed between health trainers, health promotion, learning partnerships and other public and voluntary agencies. Specific barriers to be targeted is 'Race Inequalities' and barriers of exclusion that exist for young people and their families from Black, Asian and Minority Ethnic communities. A voluntary scheme has been set up to give young people the opportunity to gain work experience and gain confidence to use in all aspects of education and career aspirations. Unity Cornwall provide services to its members for a range of activities, such as, workshop events: dance, film & DVD production workshops during the school and college holidays and again we encourage mentorees to take a leading part in all project events - it does not necessarily have to be a lead part, but helping young people to develop their leadership skills is one of our main objectives. In the last project we organised a DVD was produced. This DVD captured the opinions and concerns of young BME people. The interview sessions also highlighted their experiences of what it is like to be brought up to live in Cornwall. A DVD can be obtained by post or email (for contact details, please go to 'Contact Us' webpage). |
