Invitation to the Muslim Council for Great Britain |
The Asian Community Centre based in Carnon Downs held an event on the 6th October 2009 which was arranged by Unity Cornwall on behalf of Muslim Community.
The Muslim Council for Great Britain were invited to visit Cornwall to give a talk on the history of Asian people's migration and integration into British society, but was also to support the aims and objectives of the Centre itself. Many other topics were discussed with a perpective of national picture and issues asian people have had to face since their migration in the 1960's and how Muslim people live today in Britain.
A workshop event directly followed this presentation with many public service representation attending the event. The workshop's aim was to give the local Muslim people the chance to raise concerns surrounding the development of the Community Centre and other areas of possible improvement to public services as well as addressing inequality issues. It is for the first time in Cornwall's history that public service representatives have had the opportunity to meet with individuals from the Muslim community which can only be credited to the fact that this event wouldn't have taken place if the Asian Community Centre wasn't built with an open door policy to share its values and an insight to the needs of all asian people living in Cornwall. Unity Cornwall hope this is a start of better things to come.
The Asian community would like to thank the Muslim Council for Great Britain for coming all the way from Leistershire to give their presentations and would like to extend their thanks the many Public Service organisations (Devon & Cornwall Police, Carrick Housing Ltd., NHS Primary Care Trust, the Local Councillor, Cornwall Council, Learning Skills Council) who agreed to attend the event. This gave individuals from the Asian community a chance to their share ideas in how the Asian Community Centre should be developed and a great deal of advice and ideas were given in how to tap into existing resources to help complete the development of the Centre. It was also a great opportunity for public service representatives to gather information directly from this community engagement process to help identify gaps in services in order to help improve the lives of Asian people living and working in Cornwall.
It is clear that the Centre itself still falls short of be completed as the building still requires much time and fund raising opportunities to ensure that the Asian community in Cornwall have at least one venue were they have a cultural focus and which allows them to celebrate family events, such as, weddings and religious practices.
A report will be completed and share with all who participated and will be available on request from those who share in the Centre's aspirations.

Community Climate Change Conference |
What will it be like to live in a Cornish village during the remainder of this century? How will life change for rural dwellers? It now seems certain that the impact of climate change and the gradual decline in global oil supplies will mean that things will change for us all during our own lifetimes and those of our children. It is equally certain, however, that if we act now and act together we can adapt our lifestyles to continue to enjoy the benefits of rural living in genuinely sustainable communities. A community conference to highlight the challenges of climate change in a fun and interactive way is to be held at the Eden Project on Wednesday 31st October. |
